An Australian lawyer is expected to be involved in the defence of a former Solomon Islands militant leader arrested on two charges of murder.

It's understood that Gary Scott, who is currently in Honiara, has been retained as a lawyer for former Malaita Eagle Force Field Commander, Jimmy Rasta Lusibaea.

Although not yet admitted to practice in Solomon Islands legal system, Scott is expected to be a key member of the defence team.

Lusibaea was arrested by members of the intervention force earlier this month.

He and a numer of associates are alleged to have murdered two police Special Constables in January 2002.
