Tonga ponders a fat tax to solve its problems with life style diseases

Tonga is looking at measures such as taxes on unhealthy food as part of its drive to tackle illneses such as diabetes and cardio vascular disease.

A workshop in underway in Nuku-alofa aimed at developing a National Strategy to deal with non communicable disease.

Dr Viliame Poloka, who is in charge of health promotion at the Health Department, says increasing the cost of unhealthy food mgith be one way to reduce consumption:

"That will be difficult to ban anything, but maybe a tax, you know, above a certain level of tax, maybe fifteen per cent, and another tax to put on that, and so forth."
