Fire on Savaii in Samoa is now out

11:11 am on 22 October 2003

A week-long blaze on the island of Savaii in Samoa has finally ended after rain fell and winds died down.

The acting fire commissioner, Semi Lesa, says ten firemen are returning to Upolu today after the fire, which spread over a thousand acres, was put out last night.

He says the damage is extensive in the forestry and bush area.

Mr Lesa says he's glad it's over as it could have been a huge national disaster.

"It's finished now. It's been demolished by the fire service. Luckily the wind has gone down and there is no problem with the wind. It usually tends to blow up the fire through the bush and its been calm down now."
