Vanuatu head of prison services reinstated

12:39 pm on 16 October 2003

Vanuatu's former head of prison services, Captain John Taleo, has been reinstated by the Police Service Commission following his suspension over allegations of police brutality against prisoners.

Mr Taleo says he won reinstatement after convincing the Commission that he had to use a whip on the behind of an escapee to teach him to obey the law.

Mr Taleo argued that his case could not be called police brutality because the victim was already a prisoner when he chose to escape to continue terrorising the public.

Mr Taleo and another police officer, Superintendent Willie Samuel, who was also suspended on a charge of brutality, have both been reinstated, along with four others who were acquitted for lack of sufficient evidence.
