Solomons cabinet minister in court on driving charges

10:18 am on 1 October 2003

A controversial Solomon Islands Cabinet Minister has appeared in court on five traffic charges.

Daniel Fa'afanua, the Minister of Communication, Aviation, and Meteorology, had been charged with careless driving, drink driving, speeding, driving an unlicensed vehicle and refusing a police direction to stop.

When pulled over by police in August, Fa'afanua identified himself as a Cabinet Minister in an effort to persuade police to overlook his traffic infringements.

The Minister is to re-appear in court on Tuesday next week.

The local media recently accused Fa'afanua of misappropriation, while last year he allegedly extorted money from a newspaper editor over an article he took exception to.
