PNG Mp calls for prostitution to be legalised

4:31 pm on 22 September 2003

An MP in Papua New Guinea has called for prostitution to be legalised to help prevent the spread of HIV/Aids.

Dr Banare Bun said during Question Time in parliament that many sex workers were forced into the trade because of the need to support their families.

He said if prostitution was legalised, better controls could be put in place to monitor their activities.

Dr Bun, who was formerly a medical practitioner in Lae, has warned that the country stands to lose thousands of teenagers and a good part of the working population if there are no immediate changes to regulate the sex industry.
