Cook Islands police call for laws to protect children from sex abuse

Police in the Cook Islands have called for legislation to be passed to protect children from sex abuse.

Senior Sergeant Ken Ben says the country's leaders need to show commitment towards reviewing the existing laws, with police now calling for the Cook Islands to follow Fiji's example and adopt legislation.

He says the last known case of sex abuse was a few years ago in Aitutaki.

In 1998, a tourist was reported to have taken an eight-year old girl home with him to Germany after paying the parents money.

At the time, the girl's parents denied any wrongdoing.
