Fiji police commissioner to fight transnational crime

8:42 am on 27 August 2003

Fiji's new police commissioner, Australian Andy Hughes, says he will not allow high profile crime to take control of the country.

Mr Hughes told Radio Fiji that transnational crime, money laundering, people smuggling, drugs are not the obvious crimes one sees reported in the media, but no level of criminality can be ignored.

"The reality is it's an insidious form of cancer that will eat out the core of society and we've seen examples around the world where countries have ignored trans-national crime and it's been at their peril and they're now controlled by crime lords."
