Fiji PM sets ultimatum for FLP on cabinet list names

8:22 am on 19 August 2003

Fiji's prime minister, Laisenia Qarase, has given the Labour Party leader, Mahendra Chaudhry, a deadline to come up with names of MPs he wants included in a multi-party cabinet.

The Daily Post reports that a 48-hour ultimatum will come into effect on Mr Chaudhry's return from abroad and their next scheduled meeting on Monday.

The newspaper quotes Mr Qarase as saying he wants to see the multi-party issue resolved and if Mr Chaudhry does not meet his deadline, it will mean that Labour will be taking up the opposition.

Mr Qarase says he wants the matter resolved as soon as possible because it has dragged on for too long.

He also says Mr Chaudhry needs his head examined for sending a letter to the Pacific Islands Forum summit seeking regional intervention over the issue.
