Solomons government travel budget overspent by 800 percent

The Solomon Islands treasury secretary, Shadrach Fanega, says spending for some overseas travel by government workers is more than 800 percent over budget.

He says attending the Forum in Auckland has cost the country tens of thousands of dollars which could have been spent on delivering goods and services to the country.

Mr Fanega says there was no need for a 17-member delegation when the country had sent 8 delegates to previous Forums.

He says the government is losing discipline and control over its finances.

Mr Fanega says such expenses could be easily controlled if it cares to take stock of what it does and does not have.
