A senior New Zealand Foreign Affairs official says a review of the Pacific Islands Forum secretariat is likely in the near future.
John Larkindale will head the New Zealand delegation of officials at the Forum leaders' meeting in Auckland this week.
He says there is a need to consider what sort of mandate the secretariat should have in the years ahead.
"The world has changed, the region has changed, needs have changed and over time there has been a number of reviews of the secretariat and of the Forum, and I think again it is time to take a step back and is the system and the structures the best suited for supporting leaders as they go about their complex task of governing in a increasingly globalised interconnected kind of world."
