American Samoa hires teachers despite hiring freeze

A shortage of teachers in American Samoa has prompted the territorial administration to make an exception to the hiring freeze in the public sector.

In June, the governor, Togiola Tulafono, imposed an immediate stop to the employment of career and contract employees funded with local revenue.

But students are to go back to school in less than two weeks and the governor says it's not fair for the children to suffer from a lack of teaching staff.

The waiver for the education department means that 40 positions can be filled.
