The Papua New Government is negotiating with aid agencies for funds to repair the delapidated Highlands Highway.
The Works Minister Gabriel Kapris says a team of engineers has been assessing the state of the road, which is the crucial road link for much of the country.
The National newspapers reports the Minister says other officials from the Works Ministry have been meeting with the Finance Ministry and the Transport Department on how to fast track the repair project.
Mr Kapris says the provincial governments will need to provide some funding to ensure support from the National Government and aid agencies.
He says the World Bank may fund repairs between Chimbu and Mr Hagen but negotiations are continuing.
Mr Kapris says a complete upgrade will be very expensive so the Government is trying to break the job into sections in the hope aid donors will pick it up more easily.
