Pacific trade advocate says its expansion is hampered by red tape

The Pacific Island Trade Commissioner in New Zealand says potential investors have expressed concerns at the amount of bureaucracy in the Pacific.

This week the Pacific Islands Investment Commission hosted seminars in Auckland and Wellington, encouraging business people to invest in Pacific nations.

But Commissioner, Parmesh Chand, says concerns have been raised about the length of time it takes to get approval for projects.

"There is a lot of scope for improvement in the approvals process for businesses and investment as well as after care services.... we would like to work hand in hand with authorities in the Islands to improve that because we are looking at a speedier process"

Mr Chand says he is happy with the turnout of around 70 potential investors at the seminars.

He says he has noticed many new faces since the seminars began in 1999, which has enabled the commission to enlarge its database.
