Fiji police attacked while destroying marijuana crop on Vanua Levu

A group of Fiji villagers armed with spears, forks and stones have attacked a police party in a remote part of the country.

Fiji TV reports the attack took place after police uprooted more than a thousand marijuana plants being grown for sale at the South Pacific Games later this month.

It says the attack happened at the site of isolated, almost inaccessible marijuana farms deep in the forests of Cakaudrove province on the second island of Vanua Levu.

Ther police mamged to subdue the attackers with the assistance of other villagers who were co-operating in a marijuana eradication programme.

Assistant Superintendent of Police, Isoa Gavidi, says the attackers have been remanded in custody and will appear in Labasa court next week.
