PNG parliament lacks quorum

5:26 pm on 1 July 2003

The Papua New Guinea Parliament had to adjourn prematurely yesterday because it lacked a quorum of MPs.

It could only muster 35 of its 109 members when, in addition to the Speaker, 37 are needed.

The cancellation means the session will be extended by a further week after next week to ensure that the parliament sits for its constitutionally prescribed 63 days a year.
