Border control course to be held by Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat

8:38 am on 17 May 2003

The Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat is holding special training to improve border controls in its member countries.

The secretariat's acting secretary-general, Iosefa Maiava, says the course is being held because member countries are seeking better controls at their ports of entry to prevent international terrorism, people smuggling and drugs and weapons smuggling.

The course in Suva is being held from the 19th to the 30th of May.

The course will train trainers so that they continue the programmes in their own countries.

Training will include identifying fraudulent passports, tickets and associated documents.

The border control course is being supported by the French and Australian governments.
