Solomon Islands capital suffers from power crisis

10:17 am on 6 May 2003

Solomon Islands radio says electricity to government buildings in the capital has been cut off because the government failed to pay its bill.

The radio says the government owes about one million US dollars to the Solomon Islands Electricity Authority.

The government recently signed a deal to settle the account in instalments, but the radio report says it missed a payment in March and another one last month.

Power supplies were subsequently cut.
