Authorities in Fiji are stepping up security for the South Pacific Games in Suva in June and July of this year.

The secretary for home affairs,Col Jeremaia Waqanisau, has told Radio Fiji that security levels have been increased at ports, airports, immigration, customs and hotels.

Col Waqanisau says the measures have been taken in view of the current situation in the Middle East and the government's committment to provide security at embassies and high commissions.

He says the public should rally behind the enforcement agencies in maintaining law and order in the country.

Several earlier reports had said that disgruntled elements within Fiji were planning to destabilise the country during the Games.

About five thousand competitors and officials are expected in Fiji during the games plus thousands of spectators.
