The Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea, Sir Michael Somare, is the latest to join what our correspondent calls a programmed campaign on behalf of National Alliance candidates in this month's supplementary election in Southern Highlands.
Sir Michael joined the campaign following visits to the province by the Inter Government Minister, Sir Peter Barter, Planning Minister Sinai Brown and Treasurer Bart Philomen.
Our correspondent Peter Niesi says success in the poll is considered vital by all the parties making up the coalition government.
"The Somare coalition government comprises a nuber of different parties, but there have been some shake-ups in various parties. All of the parties within the coalition are going into this election a lot more to try and strengthen their bargaining positions so they can remain part of the government."
Peter Niesi.
The week long poll begins on April 26th.
