Fiji's military commander, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, has given an assurance that no one would topple the elected government of the day.
The Fiji Sun reports that Commodore Bainimarama has brushed aside rumours of a coup and warned those making statement to create instability to stop.
Commodore Bainimarama says Fiji has gone through a very difficult period since the May 2000 coup but law and order had been restored.
He says moves by a certain group to free the coup front man, George Speight, and his accomplices should stop because they have been tried and sentenced by a court of law.
Commodore Bainimarama says politicians have criticised him recently for his comments in the media, but as head of the army he had to address the public on what was happening.
Meanwhile the army commander and the Prime Minister, Laisenia Qarase, will meet in Suva this morning following reports of increasing friction between the armed forces and the government.
The talks are expected to focus on national security issues and come after the army unilaterally withdrew soldiers guaring the official residences of the prime minister and the president.
