Visitors to Marshall Islands complain about rubbish

5:32 am on 19 February 2003

The total number of visitors to the Marshall Islands last year increased by over 10 percent compared to 2001.

The Marshall Visitors Authority says the total count increased from five and a half thousand to six thousand.

Most of the increase came from the tourist category of visitors...many of those were on cruise ships.

While many of those visiting the Marshalls said they enjoyed their visits, others complained about the rubbish.

The General Manager of the Visitors Authority, Mark Stege, says he received a letter recommending that Majuro be by-passed because of its rubbish problem.

Mr Stege says the problem is caused in part by public indifference towards littering.
