Former Fiji opposition leader to preside at International Court on Rwanda

The United Nations General Assembly has elected the president of the Fiji Court of Appeal, Jai Ram Reddy,to the International Criminal Court on Rwanda.

The Fiji government nominated Mr Reddy and the foreign affairs minister, Kaliopate Tavola, says he topped the ballot from among 22 nominations.

The new group of judges will replace the current tribunal when its term expires in May.

The International Criminal Court hears cases involving genocide and human rights abuses which occured in Rwanda in the mid-1990s.

Mr Reddy is is a long-time former opposition leader in Fiji who retired from politics after the National Federation Party lost the 1999 general election.
