Samoa beefs up its national herd

5:40 pm on 9 December 2002

Samoa's Ministry of Agriculture has been processing a shipment of nearly two thousand cattle ..intended to improve the country's breeding stock.

Quarantine officials have been helping the Ministry move the animals off the ship and onto holding farms.

They will then supervise the cleaning of the wharf and of the trucks and will supervise the disposal of animal bedding used during the unloading and transporting process.

The cattle shipped from Queensland are the latest attempt to improve the national herd.

Cabinet approved the shipment after being convinced that new blood was needed to combat shrinking body size and milk production
