9:34 am on 6 December 2002

Reports from Vanuatu say an earthquake a week ago on Merelava island has caused massive damage.

The 6-point-8 quake in the very north of the country is reported to have triggered landslides, damaging about 70 houses and destroying the water supply.

There are no reports of death or injury.

News of the impact of the quake took several days to reach the disaster relief office in Port Vila and reports say Merelava residents felt aftershocks for several days.
