The Vanuatu Government has, for the first time, appointed a woman to head a department.
Meriam Abel, who is a board member of the World Health Organisation, has been named the new Director General of Health.
She is a career public servant with a degree in tropical health and nursing qualifications.
Meanwhile, the Public Serivce Commission has made Steven Tahi the new Director General of Lands.
