Fiji's churches want the Fiji Rugby Union's proposal to install gaming machines around the country examined before any decisions are made.
The Fiji Times reports that senior executives of the Assemblies of God, Catholic and Seventh Day Adventist churches are concerned about the possible impact of the machines on people and their families.
The Fiji Council of Churches wants an intensive consultation process before the government decides on the proposal, which is designed to raise revenue for the rugby union.
The council's general secretary, Ben Bhagwan, says he believes the introduction of gambling will result in the breakdown of morals and values.
Mr Bhagwan says people are already struggling to feed, clothe and provide for their families and gaming will further worsen their situation.
