Fiji's military commander, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, has been promoted to Rear Admiral, the highest rank ever achieved by a Fiji naval officer.
The Daily Post reports the appointment has been made by President Iloilo, who is the commander in chief of the military, on the recommendation of the minister for home affairs.
Rear Admiral Bainimarama was brough in from the Fiji navy to head the military in 1999.
He is quoted as saying he believes the government has plans for him and he looks forward to shouldering his new responsibilities.
