French high commissioner to New Caledonia opposes threatened teachers' strike

4:53 pm on 7 November 2002

The French high commissioner in New Caledonia has described a threatened teachers' strike as unacceptable.

Daniel Constantin told the local press that he cannot condone that a range of unions stop work over social security insurance issues when students face important exams.

The threats affect the final high school examinations, with Mr Constantin saying students should not face the pressure of being told that they may not be able to sit these important tests.

He says it is not a question of avoiding problems but of finding a solution.
