The administration of the New Caledonian capital has decided on several measure to improve security in Noumea's centre at weekends.
A top official in charge of security, Jean-Pierre Guillemard, has told the local daily newspaper that police would get three new vehicles to be used for rapid intervention in the city.
Mr Guillemard says a special eight-strong force will now be in the streets from Friday afternoon in reponse to concern expressed by many businesspeople over unruly behaviour.
He says the consumption of alcohol in public will be fought amid plans to restrict such sales.
He says discussion with the provincial government involve the possibility to install better street lighting and to halt noise pollution by clamping down on the use of some car stereo boosters.
