Voters on New Caledonia's Lifou Island have elected a new municple council.
The polling was the second round of a vote which had been anulled last year.
From Noumea, here's Walter Zweifel:
"The leader of the Caledonian Union won 26 of the council's 33 seats. It defeated the RPCR/FCCI coalition, which won just five seats and the Palika on two seats. The turn-out was just over 50 per cent..a modest increase over last weekend's figure of 46 per cent."
