Porgera mine in PNG expected to be operational by weekend

The Managing Director of Placer Niugini, Evert Van Den Brand, says the Porgera Mine in Papua New Guinea should be fully operational by the weekend.

The mine in the Southern Highlands has been closed since July because power lines to it had been vandalised in unrest after the election.

Mr Van Den Brand says power was restored this week and he is hoping the mine can be up and running by Saturday.

He says mediation by Inter Government minister Sir Peter Barter played a big role.

"He certainly had a distinct influence there, he has been visiting on a regular basis and there has been an effort to get the services to the peole restored. It's a little bit slow but at least visible efforts are there. The attitude of the people around the power line has changed quite dramatically and we are confident that we can keep it going."
