Papua New Guinea's Western Provincial Governor says he is shocked at the large scale logging he witnessed as part of an Greenpeace anti-logging campaign during the weekend.
The Post Courier reports Dr Bob Danaya saying while onboard Greenpeace's Arctic Sunrise, he saw a large number of logs illegally felled from the province's controversial Kiunga-Aiambak area being shipped to an Asian freighter anchored off the coast.
Dr Danaya says he wants those responsible for illegal logging to be investigated and charged.
He says his people were not receiving any benefit from the logging operations.
Meanwhile, Greenpeace's forests campaigner, Bianca Havas has criticised the former Prime Minister, Sir Mekere Morauta for not doing anything about the illegal logging despite being told about it for four months.
Ms Havas has called on the new Prime Minister, Sir Michael Somare to right the mistakes of his predecessor.
