Power and water cut to Fiji government offices after bills are not paid

10:15 am on 23 August 2002

Electricity and water have been cut off in two Fiji government office complexes in Suva and Tavua because of unpaid bills.

The power to the lift in the eight-story Suvavou House which accomodates the ministries of foreign affairs and finance was cut off yesterday after it was discovered that bills for all this year were not paid.

It was then discovered that the power bill for the whole building for the last two years amounting to 240 thousand dollars was not paid because of confusion about whose responsibility it was.

The power supply to the building, except to the lift, remains intact with the government now saying it will pay the amount from the 2003 budget.

Meanwhile, the water supply to the district administration building in Tavua has been cut for a week because the bills have not been paid for the last three years.

At least eight government departments including the office of the Tavua district officer have been without water since last Thursday.

Water is supplied in Fiji by the public works department while power is delivered by the state-owned Fiji Electricity Authority.
