Murder trial in Papua may be delayed

The trial of nine members of Indonesia's Army Special Force or Kopassus, charged with last year's killing of the pro-independence Papua leader, Theys Eluay may be delayed.

The National Military Police Chief, Major General Sulaiman A.B. said that his team had not finished their investigation into Eluay's murder.

Earlier, Sulaiman said that his team would hand over the dossiers to the military tribunal this month.

But Sulaiman said the handover will now be delayed because of the need to continue with the investigation.

He refused to comment on whether there was difficulty in collecting evidence and summoning witnesses.

Theys was found dead last November, a few hours after attending the National Heroes Day commemoration at the Jayapura headquarters of Kopassus.

Currently, nine Kopassus members, including three senior officers are in military police detention.
