Australia's Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs says the overwhelming majority of asylum seekers on PNG's remote Manus Island refused refugee status are appealing the decision.
By the end of June Australian officials had rejected the claims for asylum of 73 Iraqis and 18 people of other nationalities.
As with asylum seekers assessed by the UNHCR, the people on Manus assessed by Australian authorities have a right of appeal.
The Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs says those seeking a review are given an opportunity to provide new information in support of their claims.
The Department says those found not to be refugees are expected to leave the country as soon as circumstances permit.
Of the 245 on Manus found to be legitimate refugees, the Department says Australia will take its fair share, but it is looking for other countries to share the burden.
The PNG Government says New Zealand may take as many as 50 of the Manus refugees, but the New Zealand Government is yet to confirm this.
