Australian trade union launches sanction action against Fiji

9:09 am on 8 June 2002

An Australian trade union has begun the first phase of action to impose sanctions on air and sea links with Fiji

The Fiji Times reports that members of the Transport Workers Union last night refused to service an Air Pacific flight from Brisbane to Nadi, forcing a delay to its departure.

The president of the union, Hughie Williams says the plane was not cleaned and catered for and no freight was loaded.

More flight disruptiuons are expected this weekend in solidarity action to support moves to get the state-owned Airports Fiji Limited to recognise the Fiji Public Servants Association.

The president of the Australian Council of Trade Unions, Sharron Burrows, says full bans against Fiji will be triggered if the dispute is not resolved by Monday.
