Reports from Vanuatu say there has been a call on the prime minister to re-shuffle the government.
Political advisors of the junior coalition partner, the Union of Moderate Parties, are reported to have sought the appointment of Charlot Salwai as trade minister to replace Jean Alain Mahe, who is also a UMP member.
The information was leaked to the Trading Post newspaper which prompted the UMP leader and deputy prime minister, Serge Vohor, to make a public denial of any planned re-shuffle.
This has led to a probe within the UMP to establish who had leaked the plan to the newspaper.
The opposition leader, Willie Jimmy, has dismissed suggestions that he has plans to set up an alternative government.
Mr Jimmy, who is a former UMP minister and now a member of the National United Party, says he cannot see an alternative administration with Mr Vohor because he has lost confidence in the UMP.
