Delayed PNG Southern Highlands elections to be held in late April

6:32 am on 20 January 2003

Papua New Guinea's Electoral Commission has announced the dates of the new Southern Highlands elections.

The elections are for both the national parliament and all the local governments in the province that had to be abandoned during the election last July

Nominations for seats will close on February 27th

Voting will start on April 26th and finish on May 9th.

Acting Electoral Commissioner, Andrew Trawen, says the elections will not go ahead if Southern Highlands leaders and police are unable to guarantee security for voters, the general public, election officials and the ballot boxes.

The Commission was forced to scrap elections in the province after violence and killings in some areas and the destruction and theft of ballot boxes from some polling stations.
