Bougainville to form a new interim assembly to oversee constitution development

4:26 pm on 10 January 2003

The Bougainville Interim Provincial Government and the Bougainville People's Congress are to merge to form the Bougainville Constituent Assembly.

The new temporary assembly is to receive debate and approve the proposed Bougainville Constitution.

Bougainville Governor, John Momis, says the Constituent Assembly will be formed after amendments are made to the National Constitution and at the conclusion of the work of the Bougainville Constitutional Commission.

Mr Momis says the successful completion of the Weapons Disposal Plan is another issue that has to be addressed before the assembly is established.

He says the combined assembly is the best option because the Interim Government and the Congress broadly represent the people of Bougainville.

Total members in the assembly will be about 90, 30 from the Interim Government and 60 from the Congress.
