Winners: A night out with the APO #2

From Upbeat, 7:00 am on 10 July 2020

We asked RNZ Concert listeners to tell us about a person they have appreciated in recent times, and why.

Everyone went into a draw for the gift of beautiful live music - a double ticket to Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra's Mozart and Dvořák, their second concert in front of a live audience since the COVID-19 lockdown.

Carey McDonald annouced the winners on Tuesday 14 July during Daybreak. Here are they are:

Matt from Auckland

Is grateful for:

Our daughter, Pippa Blackmore - all of 5 years old, is becoming a RNZ Concert aficionado. It plays constantly in my commercial workshop so when Pippa visits she says things like “I can’t wait to have the raaa laaaa laaaa music” (in an operatic tone). 5 year olds are really grounding, with a light at the end of the tunnel at a time when everything seemed a bit grim. I’d love to take Pippa to see the Orchestra proper.

Marty from Panmure

Is grateful for:

My wife Bron who has taken the year off from her Master's degree to return to the workforce to help fund one of our three sons in his first year at Victoria Uni. Being able to take Bron along later this week would be a lovely way to help brighten up her mid-winter and what has so far been a dismal 2020.'

Anne rom Meadowbank,  Auckland

Is grateful for:

My son, Andrew is my special person. He  is a London based musician, repetiteur, organist, teacher, choir master. He came home to be with his dying father, and was caught here during Lockdown. Inspite of coping with his own grief and loss, not being allowed a funeral service , and dislocation of his own career, Andrew cared for me and supported me superbly. A night with the APO would be an excellent gift of gratitude.

Matt from Mt Eden, Auckland

Is grateful for:

My partner - Sarah. Pianist extraordinaire, all around sweetheart, and love of my life. Our house was filled with joy and fun and music all lockdown. When the weather was still fine I would open the windows and doors so the neighbours could listen. Can't think of a better way to spend a lockdown than with her.

Alistair from Freemans Bay, Auckland (originally from Aberdeen Scotland)

Is grateful for:

Lucy is my partner who I was travelling around New Zealand with in March before getting stranded secondary to COVID-19. She has supported me in making the most of our situation. It has turned into our greatest adventure! She is a keen violinist and singer and had to spend her birthday in lockdown and I am planning on surprising her with tickets for your exciting programme!

Congratulations to all the winners! And for those who would love to hear The Auckland Phil's Great Classics: Mozart and Dvořák, tune in 7.30 pm on Thursday night to Music Alive.
