Peter GRAHAM: Shine as the Light

Peter Graham is a prolific Scottish composer who specialises in music for brass band. He has had a close connection with the National Band of NZ over the years and wrote a piece called ‘39th Parallel’ especially for the 2017 band. ‘Shine as the Light’ was written in 2006 for the composer’s visit to the Salvation Army’s Star Lake Music Camp and features three Salvation Army church songs within the music.

Harry JAMES arr Elgar Howarth: Concerto for Trumpet

Harry James was a jazz big band leader and legendary trumpet player. His 'Concerto for Trumpet' is not so much a concerto in the traditional sense but rather a jazzy showcase for the soloist. Featuring solo cornet Harmen Vanhoorne

David CHAULK: And my Soul Overflow

Originally from Canada, David Chaulk was a former member of the National Band. He was active as a trombonist, conductor, composer, arranger, and music publisher. He passed away in 2018. The band dedicated this performance to his memory.

Joe ZAWINUL arr David Bremner: Birdland

Austrian-American jazz musician Joe Zawinul wrote ‘Birdland’ for his jazz fusion group Weather Report featuring Wayne Shorter and Jaco Pastorius. It has since become a favourite of jazz big bands and the National Band played this brass band arrangement by their Music Director David Bremner as a rousing encore.
