Ravel's Histoires naturelles are setting of five prose poems by Jules Renard, taken from his collection of ironic vignettes of human and animal behaviour.

The three songs performed by Van Mellaerts and Baillieu are about birds:

Le paon (The Peacock)
Le cygne (The Swan)
La pintade (The Guinea Fowl)
