BEETHOVEN: Creatures of Prometheus, Overture

Beethoven's crowning achievement was to advance all the major musical genres within the mainstream Austro-German tradition.

His early period works such as his only full-length ballet 'The Creatures of Prometheus' show the clear influence of Mozart and Haydn, but at the same time he was experimenting with more radical forms and styles.

New Zealand Symphony Orchestra conducted by Lars Vogt.

The Greek legend tells how Prometheus stole fire - representing knowledge and enlightenment - from Mt Parnassus. He gifted fire to the people of his age, but incurred the wrath of the god Zeus who condemned him to suffer eternal punishment for his daring action.
