Throughout his long life, Max Bruch distinguished himself as a competent composer, conductor and professor of composition, but is really only remembered today for his fist violin concerto, composed in 1864.
After its première, Bruch himself was unsatisfied and sent the score to the great violinist Joseph Joachim, who made some suggestions.
Joachim performed the revised concerto in 1868 and the work soon became a favourite with violinists, conductors and audiences everywhere.
