Anthony Ritchie - He Moemoea; Song; Milking Before Dawn

Jenny Wollerman (soprano) and Emma Sayers (piano)

These songs by Anthony Ritchie set texts by three renowned NZ authors: Keri Hulme, James K Baxter and Ruth Dallas.

He Moemoea, which translates as 'A Dream', is a setting of a text by Hulme and portrays the classic NZ image of a child dancing alone on a beach.

Song, with words by Baxter, is one of the most popular vocal works in the NZ music repertoire, and is a soulful evocation of the figure of Jesus Christ.

Milking Before Dawn originally appeared in a large-scale vocal and orchestral work titled From the Southern Marches, and was then arranged for solo voice and piano. It is a lyrical song that evokes a rural scene in Otago, using Ruth Dallas’s iconic poem.  (
