Immense, intense and imaginative….The Weight of a Piano is about memory and identity….Cander is a smart, deft storyteller [and] understands how something as beloved as a piano can actually be a burden.”
—James Barron, The New York Times Book Review
Music is the backdrop to the Daybreak Book Corner prize for the month of August The Weight of a Piano by American novelist Chris Candor.
It tells the stories of two women—a Soviet concert pianist and a young mechanic in California— and their shared, connection to the same Blüthner piano. The Weight of a Piano details how one object can become the focus of a lifelong struggle.
To win a copy of The Weight of a Piano let us know the object you are most attached to - whether it be a piano, a tea cup (or perhaps a radio?).
Email Daybreak@rnz.co.nz and we will announce the winner on Friday 30 August.
As always, our thanks to avid reader Anna Hunt at Wellington's Marsden Books for her inspired contribution to Daybreak's Book Corner.
