The Police Association says it has reached the end of pay negotiations.

A new offer has been put on the table - which members will now decide on.

Police Association president Chris Cahill said it had been hard work to get to the offer and they were pleased to have something to put on the table for their members.

"There is some improvements on what we have been offered previously; whether it goes far enough, well that will be for the members to decide."

Cahill said if members decided not to accept the offer, it would go to final offer arbitration.

"It is clear to me that we have reached the end of negotiations and there is nothing else that's going to be put on the table," he said.

"If our members reject this, we will go to final offer arbitration, which is a system where an independent arbitrator chooses either our position or the police position."

Earlier this month police described their latest offer as "insulting", "disgusting" and "demoralising".

Police Minister Mark Mitchell said the government was negotiating in "tough economic times", while insisting it would not break its promise to recruit more police.
