Two people have died in water-related incidents this afternoon - one in the Bay of Plenty and one in southern Otago.

Emergency services were called to the first incident, where a person died while diving at Jacks Bay in Clutha District, about 1pm police said.

Bystanders had carried out CPR, however the person was unable to be revived.

Further north, at Moturiki Island, near Mount Maunganui's Main Beach, another person died after being found unresponsive in the water.

Police said emergency services had responded to that incident at 1.50pm.

First aid was provided to the person at the scene, but they too were unable to be revived.
