Police and Maritime New Zealand are trying to piece together what happened in the lead up to a man's body being found on a boat near Mount Maunganui.
The damaged boat with the man's body inside it was discovered in the Pilot Quay shore area just before 8am today.
Another person was found on shore nearby and was checked by medical personnel.
The man's body has been removed from the scene and his next of kin have been informed.
